VISIT 1/18/24
San Francisco TEST PLOT/ January 2024
TERREMOTO SF
TIME: 10AM - 11:30AM
DATE: 1/18/24
TEMP: 52F
WEATHER: a bit cloudy, no sun, but kind of a perfect CA winter morning
WIND (SPEED/DIRECTION): slight breeze from SE
SOIL MOISTURE: WET!!! perfect for soil samples
PLANTS SIGHTINGS:
WEED SIGHTINGS: vetch, wild radish (we think), clover (we think the red one?), oxalis
WILDFLIFE SIGHTINGS: none!
HUMAN ACTIVITY: one guy walking his dog
GENERAL NARRATIVE: The weeds got THICK! The rains from the last couple of weeks have really set off the plants -- our plot flags that we set in December were completely swallowed by the new growth. Our visit entailed replacing some of the old flags, retaking the North Pine plot photo to be replicated at each visit, taking soil samples from each plot, and generally just trying out the visit that we’ll be undertaking for the next year. We created a Test Plot go bag for everyone to take to the site, and quickly realized the tools that were missing (a hori hori knife is top essential!!) .
The top word on our minds this visit was WEEDS...they have really taken over with the rains so after naming the weeds we saw we’ll need to figure out the best practice for removing each one specifically. We also scoped out existing materials at Starr King that we can possibly use to demarcate the plots rather than our flimsy flags...Of note the materials we named for this are fallen eucalyptus branches, imported rocks from a previous experiment at Starr King, and random brick and paver pieces thrown about the site. We’re still ironing out some of the wrinkles with this process, but in all we are ready to start doing weekly site visits to document whatever’s going on at Starr King Test Plot! And next Friday we are doing an All SF Hands Weeding BLITZ -- it needs to happen sooner than later...
with gratitude,
elena & molly
